Ships and Men, The Ciconians, and the Lotus-Eaters
chapters 1-3
Chapter Summary
The major characters that we met in chapters 1-3 are Ulysses, Eurylochus, Poseidon, Aeolus, Morpheus, Hypnos, Hades and Persephone. A conflict that they had to face was deciding whether or not they should attack the wealthy village or not. The major events that took place in these chapters started when Ulysses and his men attacked the village. Then the men of the village decided to fight back, which forced Ulysses and his men to flee the land. They loaded on to their boats with many riches and jewels, which added to much weight to the ships. Ulysses and his crew started throwing the booty of their ships so they could have room for food. Throwing off the booty attracted the beautiful water nymphs, who then crowded around their ships begging for more. This awoke Poseidon, god of the sea, who then alerted his send to send troublesome wind to Ulysses and his men. This wind directed them to a village where there were Lotus Flowers. Lotus Flowers were magical flowers that Morpheus, the god of dreams created. The smell would force people to eat them and when they did they would fall into a deep sleep. Morpheus would then paint and read their dreams. Finally, Ulysses saw what was happening, and prevented himself from eating the flowers. He dragged his sleepy crew back on to their boats, and get all of them away from Lotus-Land.

Direct Quotes
The following quotes are direct quotes taken from the first three chapters of the book that either gave information about character development, were humorous, were surprising, were thought-provoking or were well written.
"Poseidon god of the sea, was wakened from sleep by the sound of this laughter. When he saw what was happening, his green beard bristled with rage."(pg.8)
The significance of this quote was that it shows character development for the character, Poseidon. This quote describes him as protective, furious, and bossy.
" This man is a hero. Terrible are his needs sudden his deeds, and his dreams must be his own. I can't help him. He hovered above the sleeping king and could not move."(pg.13)
This quote shows how interesting Morpheus, god of sleep believes Ulysses' life is. But this quote is also significant to the book because mostly everyone else that Ulysses stumbles upon despises him. This shows the other side of how to feel about Ulysses. Morpheus's opinion completely contradicts with anyone else's opinion of him.
" I must not eat them. But he could not put them down; his hand would not obey him. Exerting all the bleak force of his will, he grasped his right hand with his left-as if it belonged to someone else-and one by one forced open his fingers and let the flowers fall."(pg.14)
This quote shows a very well-written paragraph. It is very descriptive and visual. This quote really appeals my sight because I can really picture him doing these actions.
