Nausicaa
chapter 15
Summary
In this chapter the princess of Phaeacia (the island that Ulysses landed on) can't find anyone that she really likes to marry her. Her name is Nausicaa, since use will not marry her mother and father (Arete and Alcinous) were getting very anxious. One night when she went to sleep, a goddess appeared in her dream telling her to go to the river tomorrow. The next day Nausicaa and her maids obey this goddess and make their way to the river, planning on bathing and washing their dirty clothes. After they are along the shore for a while they finally find naked Ulysses who had just awoken from a deep sleep. The girls help him clean up and put on fresh clothes. They then take him back to their village and set him up in the guest house of the castle. Nausicaa tells her mom all about Ulysses, but she did not know his name. Nausicaa convinces her parents to throw a party or banquet for their new guest. The villagers can sense that the king does not like Ulysses so they plan to "accidentally" kill him, but then they see his strength and find that it is not possible. That night at his banquet, Nausicaa finds out who Ulysses is and sings a song about everything that he has been through, which brings him to tears. The king hears this song and grants Ulysses one wish, and so he wishes for a shop that will sail him back to Ithaca. He finally makes it home because the other gods had put Poseidon in a deep sleep so he would not see Ulysses, but he wakes up just to late. Finally Ulysses gets to Ithaca.
Questions to Discuss
1. What is special about Ulysses that makes every girl fall in love with him?
2. Do you predict that Ulysses journey is over or that he will have more struggles finding Penelope?
3. Do you think that the other gods are kinder than Poseidon?
4. If you were Ulysses would you stay at Phaeacia or take another chance of getting stranded somewhere else but possibly getting home?

Quotation expert
"She was so drunk with sun and water and she felt like she could run up the mountain and dance all day and night." pg132
This quote shows that Nausicaa can be very wild.
"For he was filled with the wild rage that makes a man ten times stronger than he really is." pg140
Ulysses can become enraged very easly.
"So all I ask of you, great king, is a ship to take me back to Ithica, where my wife waits, enemies wait, my destiny waits." pg144
This shows that Ulysses is very desperate to get back to Ithica.
"He peered out, saw the girls playing and then shrank back for he didn't want to be seen as he was, naked and bruised." pg132
He was very shy in the condition he was in.
"So Ulysses departed the next day on a splined ship manned by a picked crew, laden with rich goods the king had given him as hero's gifts." pg145
This goes to prove the fact that Ulysses is a well known hero.

Research:
In this chapter, Nausicaa's father was another helpful source in the return of Ulysses back to Ithaca. He provided a boat and getting someone to drug Poseidon making an easy sail back home for Ulysses. So i further researched him because i was curious to his past.
Alcinous is the king of the Phaeacians, the son of Nausuthous, and the grandson of Poseidon. This fact surprises me because Ulysses is Poseidon's enemy, and i would think that Alcinous would take Poseidon's side and not help Ulyssses because he is Poseidon's grandson. He was also willing to drug Poseidon, his grandfather.According to the author Homer, Alcinous rules the island of Scheria, he also has five sonsabd one daughter, Nausicaa.http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/13318/Alcinous
