Keeper of the Winds
chapter 5
Summary
In this chapter Ulysses and his men began sailing very smoothly, with no troubles at all. They had just left the Cyclops Island, and were on their way home to Ithaca. After many days with no troubles at all, a big bronze gate suddenly appeared across the ocean. Ulysses and his men were sucked in by very strong winds. It turned out to be Aelous's mountain, Aelous is the god of winds. Aelous demanded that Ulysses tell him the stories of his battles and adventures. Ulysses seemed to please Aelous, and so he gave Ulysses winds that would get him and his crew home to Ithaca. Other than just the winds that would push Ulysses boat, Aelous gave Ulysses a sack of winds to use in emergencies. He told Ulysses never to let anyone touch it and when it is opened to only let a very small amount of wind out. Ulysses sat guarding the sack for nine days without sleep, so no one would touch it. Finally Ulysses had to sleep because of how restless he was. When he fell asleep, they were only an hour away from Ithaca, they could see it. While Ulysses was sleeping, his crew members opened the sack and were pushed back by the winds all the way to Aelous's mountain, who would not share any more winds to get Ulysses and his crew home.
Questions to Think About
1. Did Ulysses show signs of giving up when he fell asleep only one hour away from Ithaca?
2. Did Ulysses act as a strong captain in this chapter, or as a weak one?
3. Would you consider Aeolus to be kinder than most of the other gods that have appeared in the story?
4. Why doesn't Ulysses crew trust him? Why do they open the bag of winds while Ulysses is sleeping?

Research
In this chapter the Greek god of the winds, Aeolus was mentioned a lot. I further researched him because of my curiosity to learn more about his mythology, legacy, tasks, and family.
I found several interesting facts about him. Including the Greek spelling of his name is Aiolos, its meaning is quick-moving or nimble. he also hand 12 children, 6 sons 6 daughters. 4 out of his 6 sons became known as gods of the direction of the winds( South wind, North wind, West wind, and East wind). wwwas the ruler of the island Aeolia and according to the author Homer, Aeolus was the sun of Hippotes.
